Federal Pacific – the name of a railroad? No – it’s the name of a company that produced defective circuit breakers manufactured in Newark, New Jersey. Federal Pacific was named in a class action law suit for falsifying their Underwriters Laboratory testing results.
These breakers are dangerous, as they were linked to numerous house fires due to the fact that they did not trip as designed when a short circuit occurred.
If you have this type of circuit breaker it should be replaced!
Many buildings constructed before 1978 used lead paint. If renovations or painting is done and lead paint had been used previously, it would be covered with new paint thereby encapsulating it. Only if its disturbed will it become friable, not unlike asbestos.
A tool / test equipment called an XRF gun shoots a radioactive cobalt beam through the surface being tested. This radioactive source excites the lead molecules in any lead paint which bounce back into the test equipment and gives the technician the exact amount of lead in the area being tested.
Here is something that we see all the time – clogged gutters!
Fall is approaching and it’s time to start thinking about cleaning your gutters. Soggy leaves can lead to water overflowing from the gutters and draining toward your foundation. This causes dampness and water entry into your basement or crawlspace. The gutters can also back up, which can force water to drain towards your home and cause damage and mold.
Many companies clean gutters – including gutter cleaning companies, landscapers and pest control companies. Be sure that whomever you choose, they clean and flush your gutters and leaders and/or underground drain lines. Having your gutters well maintained and clean can give you peace of mind going into the winter months.
